The repaired Elisa cables have restored communication between Finland and Estonia

The communication cables of Elisa, which were damaged on December 25, 2024, have been repaired. This was reported by Yle citing a statement from the company.

After the repair of two underwater cables of Elisa between Finland and Estonia, the connection has been restored. However, the completion of the repair was delayed due to weather conditions.

It is recalled that on December 25, there was a failure of the Estlink 2 electricity cable between Estonia and Finland in the Baltic Sea. After that, the Finnish border guard detained the oil tanker Eagle S, which was headed from St. Petersburg, Russia. The Finnish side suspects this vessel of damaging the cable.

On December 27, the Finnish customs service detained the cargo of the tanker Eagle S, which is suspected of damaging the cable. An investigation is underway in connection with a possible violation of the law in serious circumstances. According to updated information, the operation of four communication cables running from Finland along the bottom of the Baltic Sea has been damaged in total.

Later, it was revealed that the arrest of the oil tanker Eagle S, associated with the damage to the cables in the Gulf of Finland, remains in effect. The Helsinki District Court rejected the request to cancel the arrest.

It is recalled that the repair of the EstLink 2 electricity cable between Finland and Estonia cost more than 30 million euros.

NATO strengthens its presence in the Baltic Sea

NATO members agreed on measures to increase the Alliance's presence in the Baltic Sea after the damage to the underwater cables connecting Estonia and Finland.

It should be noted that Taiwan reported damage to an underwater internet cable off the northern coast of the island, resulting in a temporary communication failure. Taiwan has requested South Korea to detain the vessel.
