In Iran, over 900 people were executed last year, including dozens of women.

The Iranian regime executed more than 900 people in 2023

The UN Human Rights Office reported that last year the Iranian regime executed 901 people, of whom 31 were women. Most of those executed were convicted of drug-related crimes, but there were also dissidents and protesters among them.

'It is deeply concerning to see the number of death sentences increasing in Iran once again,' said the UN Human Rights representative.

Most death sentences for women are related to accusations of murder, as well as domestic violence, child marriages, and forced marriages. One woman who was executed for murder killed her husband to protect her daughter from rape.

The UN called on Iranian authorities to stop executions and impose a moratorium on the death penalty with the aim of abolishing it. About 170 states have already abolished the death penalty or imposed a moratorium on its application.

Recently in Iran, Samira Sabzian, known as 'the child bride,' was executed. She spent ten years in prison for killing her husband. The execution took place in the suburb of Tehran at the 'Ghazel Hesar' prison.

29 children in Nigeria could be executed for participating in protests

In Nigeria, 29 children are facing the death penalty for participating in protests against the economic crisis. A total of 76 protesters, including teenagers, are accused of 10 counts of serious crimes.
