Tulips for March 8: A Step-by-Step Forcing Plan from Agronomists.
According to ТСН: Growing tulips for March 8 is a carefully planned process, the main goal of which is to create conditions for the bulbs that mimic the seasons at an accelerated pace.
To obtain quality flowers in a short time, it is necessary to adhere to specific planting rules, provide prolonged cold, and timely move the plants to a warm place. Success in this process depends on the precise implementation of each stage, as even a slight deviation from the schedule can affect the blooming time and appearance of the plants.
Preparation and Planting of Tulip Bulbs
The process of obtaining flowers for the spring holiday begins with careful selection of planting material in the first half of October.
For successful forcing, only large bulbs with a diameter of over 12 millimeters are used, as only they contain a full-fledged flower bud.
Before planting, each bulb is cleaned of the hard brown scale, which allows the roots to develop without obstacles and simulates conditions to overcome potential diseases.
Planting takes place in containers with drainage holes, filled with a loose substrate based on peat and river sand. The plants are placed very close to each other, maintaining a distance of only one centimeter, and are buried so that the tops barely peek out of the soil.
When to Plant Tulips to Get Flowers by March 8
The optimal time for planting bulbs is the first half of October, specifically the period from October 1 to 15. During these days, the substrate is prepared, the bulbs are cleaned of scale, and they are planted in containers. After watering, the boxes are immediately moved to a cold room for rooting.
Features of the Cooling and Rooting Period
After planting, the longest stage begins, lasting from 16 to 20 weeks, depending on the characteristics of the variety.
During this period, the boxes with future flowers should be in an absolutely dark room with a constant temperature of 5 to 9 degrees Celsius. Such conditions imitate a natural winter, forcing the bulb to form a strong root system and accumulate energy for a quick spring start. It is important to maintain moderate soil moisture in the containers, avoiding complete drying of the substrate.
Cooling Period: November-January
This stage lasts three months and is the most stable in the process. The main task during this time is to maintain the temperature within 5-9 degrees Celsius and monitor soil moisture. The plants remain in complete darkness, forming the root system and preparing for stem growth.
Organizing the Active Growth Phase in a Warm Room
The final stage of forcing is planned for early February, giving the plants about 3-4 weeks for growth.
After moving the tulips to a bright room, the air temperature is initially maintained at 13 degrees Celsius, and then gradually increased to 18 degrees Celsius.
During this time, the plants need to be provided with intense lighting for ten hours a day and daily watering with cold water. The entire active growth cycle, from the appearance of the first sprouts to the formation of buds, takes about twenty-one days — this is enough to get flowers on time.
Methods of Flowering Control and Flower Harvesting
The final stage requires special attention to the speed of bud opening, as external conditions can affect this process.
If the plants are developing too quickly, the temperature in the greenhouse is lowered to 12 degrees Celsius to delay flowering. The harvest is cut when the bud has the characteristic color for the variety but remains firm and closed. This approach ensures that the flowers will retain their appearance as long as possible after being taken out of cold storage.
Thus, properly planned tulip cultivation allows for beautiful bouquets to be obtained by March 8, satisfying the demand for these delicate flowers on this festive day. By paying attention to detail and following recommendations, even beginners can successfully grow these attractive plants.
