Ancient Greek Laptop on Relief: What a Woman with a Maid Really Holds.
According to ТСН: Many famous inventions are attributed to ancient Greek civilization, but portable computers are not among them. However, some people think otherwise, considering the exhibit at the J. Paul Getty Museum in California.
The discussion of an interesting theory and the true origin of the artifact is highlighted in GreekReporter.
What Conspiracy Theorists Say
The sculpture known as 'Tombstone of a Woman on a Throne with a Maid' depicts a wealthy woman touching the lid of a flat object held by a slave girl.
In viral videos on the Internet, 'couch researchers' believe the object resembles a modern laptop. They are particularly drawn to the holes on the sides that look like USB ports.
'When I look at the sculpture, I can't help but think about the Delphic Oracle, which allowed priests to connect with the gods for advanced information.'
Proponents of this theory reject the version of a jewelry box, claiming that the base of the object is too thin.
What Scientists Say
Archaeologists and historians consider these claims improbable. Back in 2016, archaeologist Christina Kilgrove debunked this myth.
According to her, it is a typical tomb monument depicting the deceased in a daily scene, emphasizing her high status.
'On this stele, a woman reaches to touch the lid of the object held by a girl, whose hairstyle and clothing indicate that she is a slave.'
So what is this object really?
Most likely, it is a wax writing tablet (a kind of 'notebook' for notes) or a flat box for small jewelry.
And what about the 'USB ports'?
The holes on the side, which trouble conspiracy theorists, have a simple explanation. They are either traces of the connection of wooden elements that have long since decayed, or holes made later during restoration or modification of the sculpture.
Let us remember that archaeologists also presented a new explanation for the mysterious strip with 5200 holes in the Peruvian mountain of Monte Sierpe. Before this, the structure known as the 'Strip of Holes' had remained without an acceptable explanation for decades.
This story highlights how ancient artifacts can provoke various interpretations, from scientific to conspiratorial. As studies show, primitive objects often acquire new meanings in a modern context, depending on the approach to their study and public perception.
