These guidelines aim to maintain food quality and safety while preventing risks associated with cooking under non-standard conditions. This guidance is particularly vital for households facing extended periods without electricity.
Essential Supplies and Cooking Methods
Experts advise maintaining a stockpile of non-perishable food items, including:
- Canned goods
- Grains
- Nuts
- Hard cheeses
- Oily fish
- Vegetables
- Fruits
- Fermented products
- Flatbread (lavash)
- Crispbreads
Keeping food that requires no cooking reduces reliance on heat sources. For heating meals, a gas or camping stove is recommended. It is critical never to leave an open flame unattended due to the significant fire hazard. When the power goes out, proper food storage is also essential. A closed refrigerator will keep food cold for about four hours, while a full freezer can maintain a safe temperature for up to two days.
Several methods can be used for cooking without electricity, such as a thermos, gas burner, barbecue, or grill. For example, couscous can be prepared by adding an equal amount of water and letting it sit for 15 minutes. Buckwheat can be steeped in boiling water for half an hour or soaked in cold water for at least five hours.
Maintaining a supply of drinking water is equally important, with reserves recommended for refreshment at least every 10 days. This helps prevent crises caused by water shortages during critical periods.
