Bread Price Increase in Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: Prices for bread and bakery products in Ukraine are forecast to rise in the first ten days of February 2024. This increase is primarily driven by higher electricity tariffs and an increase in the minimum wage. The cost of electricity for industrial consumers rose by nearly 30% in January, which will significantly impact producers' expenses. This situation reflects broader economic pressures affecting the country's food production sector.

Since the start of 2024, costs for baking enterprises have already grown by 6-7%. Consequently, producers plan to raise product prices by approximately 5%. According to Oleksandr Taranenko, the electricity tariff hike alone automatically adds 2-3% to production costs. He also notes that expenses incurred by businesses during power supply interruptions are factored into the final product price.

Factors Influencing Production Costs

The average bread plant consumes 60-70 liters of fuel per hour, with specialized arctic diesel costing about 8 hryvnias more per liter than standard fuel. These factors also contribute to the overall cost of bakery goods. However, Oleksandr Taranenko states that for the average consumer, this increase will not be a critical blow to the household budget.

The anticipated price hike for bread and bakery items in Ukraine illustrates the difficult economic conditions confronting manufacturers. Rising electricity tariffs and an increased minimum wage place an additional burden on businesses, which in turn affects the final cost of goods. Consumers should prepare for a modest, yet noticeable, increase in spending on staple food items.
