Iran's Internet Nears Total Blackout: The Causes and Consequences.
Internet Access in Iran Plummets
According to TSN.ua: Internet connectivity in Iran has collapsed to just 4% of its normal level, following military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian territory. Network data analyzed by experts confirms the country is now in a state of near-total internet blackout. This digital shutdown is a common tactic used by authoritarian governments during periods of internal unrest or external conflict.
This is not the first time Iran has severed its digital lifeline; in January 2023, the government blocked the internet and deployed police and military forces to suppress widespread protests. Over 16 days of demonstrations, thousands, potentially tens of thousands, of people may have been killed. The recent attacks on February 28th mark a new phase of escalation, with Israel striking Iran, and Iran retaliating with attacks on Israel and a number of US military assets across the Middle East.
Expert Azin Hosseini noted that the regime repeatedly employs this tactic to prevent public mobilization and conceal the full extent of the damage and casualties.
Simultaneously, powerful explosions were reported in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, signaling a potential widening of regional tensions. The internet blackout in Iran and the escalating Middle East conflict threaten regional stability and international relations. With severely restricted access to information, Iranian citizens risk being isolated from the outside world, hindering both protest organization and basic communication. The situation demands close monitoring, as further actions could lead to new conflicts and a dangerous deterioration in relations between Iran, the US, and Israel.
