The Changes in Hedja's Life Due to the Child's Health Condition

According to The Sun: One of McFly drummer Harry Judd's three children received a diagnosis that changed their life significantly, as his wife Izzy explained.

The podcast host and author, who raises her eight-year-old daughter Lola and seven-year-old sons Kit and Loki, recalled that one of their children is neurodivergent.

Overview of Parenting Methods

Izzy, 41, explained that one of their children has Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), which has changed their parenting approach.

Children with PDA exhibit strong avoidance behavior towards demands – even tasks they would like to complete.

To give their child a sense of comfort, Izzy admitted that some people view her methods as 'laissez-faire' parenting.

In an interview on Dr. Alexander George's Stampedcast podcast, she shared that it was 'one of the hardest experiences.'

“Pathological Demand Avoidance is associated with autism and essentially relates to the demands placed on a child, where a lot of fear arises under the pressure of demands.”

She mentioned that the child faces numerous demands every morning: 'Eat breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth…'

“All these fears arise in them – when people exert pressure and demands. They do not respond to authority; they need autonomy and control.”

She added: 'The moment I leave the clothes lying, I no longer speak and do not ask questions, as that creates too much anxiety.'

A New Role as a Mommy Detective

Izzy said her role now involves being a 'mommy detective,' thinking about how to make her children feel 'safe' – using 'reverse psychology' for family life.

She confessed that she was not prepared for how much her children would differ after the family expansion.

Not long ago, Izzy started her own podcast 'Let's Talk About Neurodivergent Children' and admitted that she previously had 'absolutely no idea' about neurodivergent children.

What is the condition PDA?

IZZY JUDD reported that one of her children has PDA. But what is it? And how is it related to anxiety?

The main feature of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a high level of anxiety when demands are placed on a person.

The nature of avoidance behavior along with extreme social actions leads to this being described as 'pathological.'

People with PDA may appear worried about seemingly simple daily tasks and may go to great lengths to avoid them.

PDA is increasingly, but not universally, recognized as a behavioral profile observed in some people with autism.

Those who have a PDA profile have similar difficulties to those on the spectrum in the following areas:

  • Difficulties with social communication.
  • Difficulties with social interaction.
  • Restricted and repetitive behavior patterns (including seeking or avoiding sensory experiences).

The main issue for those with PDA is the 'anxiety-driven need to control and avoid the demands and expectations of others.'

Pathological Demand Avoidance is a developmental disorder where a significant refusal is observed to meet the child's requests, even when they enjoy it.

This term was coined in 1980 by British child psychologist Elizabeth Newson.

The Motherhood Experience

Izzy, a former BGT participant, previously spoke openly to 'The Sun' that she was not prepared for what to expect on the journey to motherhood.

Discussing her health, the cellist explained that her pelvic floor is 'not in the best condition,' after three births with her singer husband.

This problem means she can no longer use tampons and has consulted a women's health specialist for treatment and support.

Izzy expressed concerns that most women 'simply do not know enough' about pelvic floor health after giving birth, due to a lack of information and taboos on this topic.

“I think we underestimate what our bodies have been through,”

she said in one of the podcast episodes about postnatal health 'Motherbody.'

Harry Judd, who became world-famous in the pop band McFly, is showing a new approach to parenting his children.

The challenge that Izzy and Harry face is complex; however, they are trying to tailor their parenting to the child's needs. Their openness about the difficulties may inspire other parents in similar situations to seek support and consider new approaches to parenting. In a world where awareness of children's psychological needs is increasing, their experience underscores the importance of educating and supporting parents on these issues.
