Russia Launches Major Assault with 459 Missiles and Drones on Ukraine.
Ukraine Endures Large-Scale Aerial Barrage
According to TSN.ua: On February 26, the Russian military launched a massive aerial attack against Ukraine, employing a total of 459 weapons including missiles and drones. This assault ranks among the most extensive in recent months, particularly in terms of the sheer volume of aerial targets deployed.
The breakdown of the launched weaponry underscores the severity of the attack. Specifically, the assault included:
- 2 'Zircon' anti-ship missiles,
- 11 ballistic missiles, including 'Iskander-M' and 'S-400' types,
- 24 Kh-101 cruise missiles,
- 2 Kh-69 guided air-to-surface missiles,
- 420 attack drones.
By 10:00 AM, Ukrainian air defenses had managed to intercept or neutralize 406 of the incoming aerial targets. However, 5 ballistic missiles and 46 attack drones struck 32 different locations, with falling debris reported at an additional 15 sites.
Regions Targeted and International Response
The areas targeted in the bombardment included Kyiv, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, and the Poltava region. In a direct response to the threat, Polish armed forces scrambled fighter jets into their airspace. This attack is part of a broader pattern of intensified Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy and civilian infrastructure.
This large-scale missile and drone barrage illustrates not only Russia's continued military aggression but also the escalating threat to civilians across Ukraine.
Poland's defensive reaction highlights the potential for a wider military mobilization in the region, which could impact the security situation across Central and Eastern Europe. These events emphasize the urgent need for sustained international support for Ukraine and renewed diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
