The Defense of Sumy

According to TSN.ua: Located less than 20 miles from the Russian border, the city of Sumy became a critical strategic point following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In October 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded Sumy the title 'Hero City of Ukraine,' a recognition that honors the bravery and heroism of its residents during the conflict. This designation is part of a national effort to acknowledge cities that have shown extraordinary resilience.

Founded by Cossack settlers in the 1650s, Sumy has witnessed many historical events, but the 2022 war proved to be one of its most severe trials. In the invasion's first days, 50 paratroopers from Sumy successfully destroyed a column of Russian tanks, demonstrating the defenders' resolve. Russian forces withdrew from the Sumy region in early April 2022, yet this retreat did not end the attacks on the city.

Attacks on Sumy

On Palm Sunday 2025, Russia launched a missile strike on central Sumy, killing at least 35 people. According to ACLED data, at least 227 people have been killed in Sumy since the war's beginning. The year 2025 was the deadliest for the city, with 95 fatalities. Over the past 12 months, there have been 220 reports of damage or destruction to civilian infrastructure. Persistent strikes on energy facilities have left the city without reliable electricity, heating, and water.

'I woke up at 4 a.m. because of a phone call. I saw it was a very old friend of mine who lives in the United States. He said the war had started.' Dmytro Lantushenko

He also noted that local residents became active participants in the defense: 'People became reconnaissance drones. They would call and say, 'There's a BM-21 Grad rocket launcher in my yard. Here are its coordinates.''

The situation in Sumy underscores the persistent volatility in eastern Ukraine and the region's ongoing strategic importance. The 'Hero City' title reflects state support for its residents and their unbroken spirit in facing the aggressor. Despite immense losses and destruction, the people of Sumy continue to play an active role in defending their home, a testament to their determination and unity.
