People on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. No one can sever our family ties, and no one can stop the historical trend of national reunification.
Chinese leader Xi Jinping confirmed that no one will be able to obstruct the 'reunification' of China with Taiwan. He called this process inevitable.
In his New Year’s address, Xi noted that the 'reunification' of China with Taiwan is unavoidable. He also added that people on both sides of the strait should have a common goal and share the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
China considers Taiwan, which has a democratic governance, as its territory, while Taipei rejects these claims and states that the future of the island must be determined solely by its people, and China should respect the choice of the Taiwanese people.
Tensions in the Taiwan Strait remained high throughout 2024, especially after the election of President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a 'separatist'.
