The Syrian regime used Mount Qasioun as a barrel bomb factory
During the civil war in Syria, Bashar Assad's regime exploited Mount Qasioun near Damascus, turning it into a production site for barrel bombs. This regime has cost the lives of thousands of civilians.
'The ousted regime of Bashar Assad transformed Mount Qasioun, which was off-limits to visit, into a factory for barrel bombs that caused mass killings during the Syrian civil war,' reports the Turkish broadcaster TRT Haber.
Barrel bombs are made by filling metal barrels with explosives, scrap metal, nails, and nuts.
'These bombs are known for their low production cost, but they have a significant destructive effect. When dropped from heights, the blast radius can reach from 50 to 200 square meters, depending on the amount of explosives,' notes TRT Haber.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), from July 2012 to April 2021, Assad's regime forces used barrel bombs at least 81,916 times in attacks on civilian settlements. As a result, 11,087 civilians were killed, including 1,821 children and 1,780 women.
The provinces most affected were Damascus, Aleppo, Daraa, and Idlib. The highest number of casualties was recorded in Aleppo.
