Almazbek Sharshenovich Atambayev-former President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Prime Minister of the Republic (2010-2011), Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan. Honorary President of the Sambo Federation of Kyrgyzstan.
Place of birth. Education. Born on September 17, 1956 in Arshan, Voroshilovsky District, Frunze Region, Kyrgyzstan.
In 1980 he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Management with a degree in economic engineering and production management organization.
Career. He began his professional career as an engineer and then as a chief economist at enterprises of the Ministry of Communications of the Kyrgyz SSR. In 1981, he was appointed chief engineer of the road operation management No. 4.
Since 1983, he was a member of the Writers' Union of the USSR.
In 1989, he left all positions and began a career in business. Initially, he held the position of director of the scientific-industrial company 'Forum' until 1997 and from 1997 to 1999 the general director of AO 'Kyrzavtomash'.
From 1999 to 2004, he was the chairman of the board of the industrial group 'Forum'.
From 2004 to 2005, he was the chairman of the board of the corporation 'Kyrzavtomash'. In 2004, he was included in the list of the 100 richest people in Kyrgyzstan.
Political career. Since 1983, he was engaged in parliamentary work and became editor and senior advisor in the presidency of the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR.
From 1987 to 1989-deputy chairman of the Pervomaisky district executive committee, Frunze.
From 1995 to 2000, he was elected as a deputy of the Assembly of People's Representatives of the Jogorku Kenesh - the 2nd legislature. He was nominated again as a candidate for the Jogorku Kenesh of the 3rd legislature, but lost the elections. In the presidential elections in Kyrgyzstan in 2000, he came in third place.
After the Tulip Revolution in Kyrgyzstan in March 2005, he served as Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Kyrgyz Republic from September 2005 to April 2006.
From March 30, 2007 to November 28, 2007-Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan.
After the April Revolution, starting from April 7, 2010, he was the Deputy Head of the Transitional Government for the Economy. On July 13, 2010, he resigned.
He ran for the position of Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan but did not receive necessary support from the parliament. However, on December 17, 2010, he was appointed chairman of the government - he became the first Prime Minister of the country after the adoption of the new constitution.

On May 21, 2015, President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev signed a law that joined the country to the Eurasian Economic Union.
Scandals. Atambayev's term was marred by scandals that received widespread coverage in both Kyrgyz and international media. The source of the scandals was often personnel appointments to high state positions of people from Atambayev's personal entourage - his drivers, bodyguards, and so on.
In 2016, Atambayev conducted a referendum to amend the constitution. This initiative was described by civil society representatives, human rights defenders, journalists, and opposition figures as an attempt to seize power.
The final phase of Atambayev's presidency (2016-2017) was marked by numerous civil and criminal court proceedings against journalists, activists, opposition politicians, and human rights defenders by the government. In some court cases, Atambayev himself acted as a plaintiff, with the interests represented by the Attorney General of the Kyrgyz Republic. The lawsuits and criminal prosecutions mainly concerned openly critical regime critics.
In 2017, activist Edil Baisalov appeared at a press conference with information on the forgery and concealment of information about Atambayev's income.
Relations with Russia. Atambayev repeatedly described himself as a pro-Russian politician. He announced Kyrgyzstan's accession to the Customs Union, ensured in 2014 the withdrawal of the US military base from the country, and spoke of the need for closer economic relations with the Russian Federation, in which at least 500,000 citizens of Kyrgyzstan work. Nevertheless, he also expressed a desire to achieve greater economic and energy independence from Russia.
Criminal case. The Prosecutor General's Office of Kyrgyzstan stated that there are sufficient grounds to initiate multiple criminal cases against Atambayev. He was summoned several times but did not appear.Atambayev is accused of involvement in illegal enrichment, unlawful appropriation of land, corruption in the modernization of the Bishkek power station, and the release of the criminal authority Aziz Batukaev in 2013.
On August 7, 2019, Atambayev's residence was stormed by special forces. On August 8, he was arrested after long negotiations, he surrendered to the security forces. Alzambek Atambayev was taken out of the residence by convoy. Almazbek Atambayev was imprisoned until August 26.
On June 23, 2020, Almazbek Atambayev was sentenced to 11 years and two months in prison with confiscation of state awards and property in a corruption case .
On October 6, 2020, Almazbek Atambayev was released from the pre-trial detention center after negotiations between a group of protesters and the leadership of the State Security Service. On October 10, Atambayev was arrested again and accused by the State Security Service of participating in unrest in Bishkek the day before.
On November 30, 2020, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan overturned the verdict and returned the case for a new trial to the Pervomaisky District Court.
On February 4, 2023, the Supreme Court quashed the verdict in the case of the illegal release of the criminal authority Aziz Batukaev in 2013, and thus Atambayev, who was one of the main defendants and served an 11-year sentence, was released.
