Biography of Petro Zhyhikal

Date of Birth: 20.06.1966

Petr Tsugikal - former chairman of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. Previously, he headed the Operational Activities Department of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. He holds the title of Army General.

Place of Birth. Education. Petro Zhyhikal was born on June 20, 1966, in the village of Dunayets, Glukhiv District, Sumy Region. He graduated from the Perm Military Aviation Technical School (1989) and the National Academy of the Security Service of Ukraine (2001).

Professional Career. From 1989 to 1992, he served in the 1st Air Army in the 293rd separate air reconnaissance regiment in the positions of technician and senior technician. From 1992 to 1994, he served in the 119th separate combat helicopter regiment of the 13th separate army of the Carpathian Military District.

He began his service in the border troops in 1994 at the checkpoint Glukhiv of the Sumy border district of the Border Control Troops of Ukraine in the positions of officer and senior officer.

From 1996 to September 2014, he served in operational positions in the border protection authorities. In September-October 2014, he was the deputy head of the region of operational intelligence of the Northern region of the border combat service.

In November 2014, Petro Zhyhikal took over the Operational Activities Department of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. On his initiative and under his direct leadership, new methods of operational intelligence work were developed and implemented, and the work of the operational units was aimed at effectively countering the reconnaissance and sabotage activities of Russian special services and organized crime at the state border. Petro Zhyhikal also organized the operational security along the contact line in the security zone of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

In 2015, Petro Poroshenko awarded Petro Zhyhikal the General badge, emphasizing that he was a participant in the hostilities in Eastern Ukraine.

In July 2017, Petro Zhyhikal was appointed chairman of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine by decree of the President of Ukraine.

On May 31, 2019, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Petro Zhyhikal from his position as chairman of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. In another decree, Zelenskyy dismissed Zhyhikal from the reserve with the right to wear military uniform.

Military Rank. Major General (August 25, 2015), Lieutenant General (May 25, 2017), Colonel General (April 27, 2018), Army General (May 2, 2019).

Awards. He was awarded the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi of the III degree and other state and service awards.

Declaration. According to the declaration of Petro Zhyhikal, the family owns two cars: a 2011 Toyota Sienna and a 2012 BMW X5. The family does not own real estate, and nearly half a million hryvnias are declared in the accounts.

Family. Petro Zhyhikal is married and has two daughters.
