Career in Film. Leonardo first appeared on camera when he was two and a half years old when his father took him to a popular children's TV show. DiCaprio made his film debut at the age of 5. By 10, he was already disillusioned with the movie business - his agent insisted on changing his name (he was offered the pseudonym Lenny Williams) and Leonardo was rejected for several roles due to his hairstyle. At age 14, Leonardo decided to try to become an actor again. He found an agent, who liked both his hairstyle and his name. He appeared in more than 30 commercials and several series 'Santa Barbara'.
His debut film was the horror comedy 'Critters 3'. Since 1991, he appeared in the series 'Growing Pains', but left the show to film 'This Boy's Life' (1993). DiCaprio beat out more than a hundred applicants for the role of Tobias Wolff in this film. He received critical acclaim, with some stating that he outperformed Robert De Niro himself. Later, in 1993, he starred alongside Johnny Depp in the drama 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'. In this film, he played Johnny's mentally disabled brother. His honest and open performance earned him an Oscar nomination. The then 19-year-old actor first attracted media attention.
In 1994, the western 'The Quick and the Dead' was released, where DiCaprio had one of the leading roles. In 1995, DiCaprio starred in the adaptation of Jim Carroll's novel 'Basketball Diaries', a project that had been delayed for many years waiting for a young talented actor. The film became a box office hit, mainly due to Leonardo's performance. That same year he appeared in 'Total Eclipse', where he depicted the homosexual relationship between poet Arthur Rimbaud and his teacher Paul Verlaine, played by David Thewlis. Critics were thrilled, and DiCaprio was immediately recognized as a member of the sexual minority. In 1996, he starred in two films: 'Marvin's Room', where his partners were Meryl Streep and Diane Keaton, and 'Romeo + Juliet', a modern interpretation of William Shakespeare's titular romantic tragedy.
1997 marked a breakthrough year for Leonardo DiCaprio. Alongside Kate Winslet, they played lead roles in James Cameron's blockbuster 'Titanic'. Leonardo’s character is 22-year-old Jack Dawson, who, winning a ticket, boards the Titanic, doomed to sink during its maiden and final voyage. The film became the highest-grossing in film history, and Leonardo received a nomination for the 'Golden Globe' and positioned him among the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
In 2002, Leonardo DiCaprio starred in Steven Spielberg's crime dramedy 'Catch Me If You Can'. The film was based on the biography of Frank Abagnale, known for his daring crimes committed in the 1960s. The film received positive reviews from critics and became one of the most successful for DiCaprio. Leo received his third nomination for a 'Golden Globe'.
Also in 2002, DiCaprio starred for the first time with director Martin Scorsese in the film 'Gangs of New York' about the clash between the 'native' American gangs...
