Lubomyr Husar

Date of birth: 26.02.1933

Place of birth. Education. Bishop Lubomyr Husar was born in Lviv, where he completed elementary school and the first class of high school. In 1944, the family had to leave Ukraine. They initially lived in Austria. In Salzburg, the bishop continued his education at a Ukrainian gymnasium.

In 1949, the Husar family moved to the USA. Bishop Lubomyr completed his schooling at the Little Seminary in Stamford, Connecticut. Later, he studied philosophy at St. Basil's College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1954.

He completed his theological studies at the Catholic University of Washington. In 1958, he graduated in theology as a student of the Holy Josephat Major Seminary. He later studied philosophy at Fordham University in New York. In 1967, he earned the title of Master. In 1969, he obtained his doctorate in theology.

Priestly career. In March 1958, Bishop Ambrosius Senyshyn ordained Priest Lubomyr Husar for work in the Eparchy of Stamford.

From 1958 to 1959, he served as a teacher and prefect at the St. Basil's Seminary in Stamford and served as a chaplain at the Ukrainian National Association center in Kerhonkson, New York, and at the Educational Center of the Ukrainian Youth Association of America in Ellenville, New York. From 1965, he was the pastor of the Holy Trinity Parish in Kerhonkson.

In 1969, he moved to Rome to deepen his theological studies. In 1972, Bishop Lubomyr was appointed Doctor of Theology and entered the Monastery of St. Theodora (Benedictine monks) in Grottaferrata, Italy.

From 1973 to 1984, he taught at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome and fulfilled tasks of Patriarch Joseph.

On April 2, 1977, he was consecrated a bishop by Patriarch Joseph Slipyi in the monastery of the Order of St. Basil in Castel Gandolfo near Rome.

In 1978, Patriarch Joseph appointed him the Archimandrite of the Monastery of St. Theodora and responsible for the monasteries of the Benedictine Order outside Ukraine.

From 1984 to 1991, he was the Protosyncellus of the Archdiocese of Lviv in Rome.

In 1993, he returned with the entire community from Grottaferrata to his homeland, Ukraine.

From 1993 to 1994, he served as a cleric at the Theological Academy of the Holy Spirit in Lviv.

In 1995, the community founded its own Monastery of St. Theodora Studita in the village of Kolodeyivka in the Ternopil region.

In November 1996, Bishop Lubomyr was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

On January 26, 2001, Lubomyr Husar was elected Archbishop of the UGCC at an extraordinary bishop's synod. On February 21 of the same year, Pope John Paul II appointed him Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

On August 21, 2005, the relocation of the UGCC headquarters from Lviv to Kyiv was announced.

On February 10, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Lubomyr Husar.

Death. On May 31, 2017, Lubomyr Husar passed away at the age of 85.
