Jeremy Richard Streynshem Hunt is a British politician, a member of the Conservative Party, former Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, Health Secretary in the first and second Cabinets of David Cameron (2012-2018) and in the first and second Cabinets of Theresa May (2018-2019). Since 2022, he has been the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
Place of Birth. Education. Jeremy Hunt was born on November 1, 1966, in London. He is the eldest son of Admiral Sir Nicholas Hunt, who served as Commander-in-Chief of the British Navy from 1985 to 1987 - one of the highest ranks in the British Navy.
Jeremy attended Charterhouse School. He studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Magdalen College, University of Oxford, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) with honors. David Cameron and Boris Johnson also studied at Oxford. He was an active member of the Oxford Conservative Association and was elected its president in 1987.
Career. After graduation, Hunt worked for about two years as a management consultant at OC&C Strategy Consultants.
He taught English in Japan.
Upon returning to the UK, he attempted several business ventures, including a failed attempt to export jam to Japan.
In the 1990s, his company, founded to collect information on educational courses, generated £14 million.
Political Career. In 2005, Hunt was elected to the House of Commons for the South West Surrey constituency with the support of 50.4% of voters. In the 2010 elections, he won with 58.9% of the votes.
In December 2005, he was appointed Secretary of State for Disabled People in the Conservative shadow cabinet and in July 2007, became the shadow minister for Culture, Media, and Sport.
On May 12, 2010, Jeremy Hunt became Secretary of State for Culture, Media, and Sport in Cameron's first cabinet, responsible for preparing for the Olympics.
On September 4, 2012, Hunt became Health Secretary.
In 2015, Hunt won again in his traditional constituency in the general elections with 59.9% of the votes compared to 9.9% of his strongest opponent, the UK Independence Party candidate Mark Webber.
On July 13, 2016, David Cameron resigned as Prime Minister after the referendum on the UK's EU membership resulted in a vote to leave the EU. Theresa May succeeded him, and Hunt retained his position as Health Secretary in her cabinet.
On July 9, 2018, he became Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom after Boris Johnson resigned.
On July 23, 2019, he lost the election for the leadership of the Conservative Party to Boris Johnson, receiving about half the votes: 46,656.
On October 14, 2022, he became Chancellor of the Exchequer in Liz Truss's cabinet.
On October 25, 2022, Rishi Sunak formed his cabinet, in which Hunt retains his position.
Family. Married. Hunt's wife, Lucia Guo, is from Xianya, China. They married in July 2009 and have one son and two daughters.
