In 2002, Gina Haspel led the secret CIA prison in Thailand, known as 'Cat Eye', where terrorists including Al-Qaeda members Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri and Abu Zubaydah were held. A report by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence states that torture was applied during the detention of suspects in this prison. The interrogations and torture of the 'Cat Eye' prisoners were recorded on video. A total of over 92 such recordings were made. In 2005, CIA Deputy Director Jose Rodriguez ordered the destruction of the interrogation videos.
From 2005, Gina Haspel led the CIA Headquarters Anti-Terrorism Unit. In the memoirs of the former director of this center, Jose Rodriguez, it is mentioned that Haspel achieved the destruction of the videotapes showing footage from the Thai prison.
In 2013, she was appointed head of the National Clandestine Service. She was removed from her position due to criticism of her past and her association with torture in Thailand.
On February 2, 2017, Donald Trump appointed Haspel as deputy to Michael Pompeo. Some members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence opposed her appointment at the time and called for an investigation, as Gina Haspel was personally involved in the use of unlawful interrogation methods and then contributed to the unauthorized destruction of the video recordings.
On March 13, 2018, Trump appointed Gina Haspel as CIA Director. With the approval of Congress, Gina Haspel will be the first woman to hold this position.
On May 17, 2018, the US Senate approved Haspel's appointment as CIA Director.
On January 19, 2021, the day before the inauguration of the elected President of the USA Joe Biden, Gina Haspel stepped down from her position as CIA Director
Awards. For her fight against terrorism, Gina Haspel has been honored with many state awards, including presidential awards. Haspel is a recipient of the George V. Bush Award for Excellence in the Fight Against Terrorism, the Donovan Award. She received the Intelligence Medal of Merit and the President's Rank Award, the highest award in the USA for public service.
