Place of Birth. Education. Born in Kharkiv. Graduate of the National Law Academy of Yaroslav the Wise in Law and the Kharkiv State Economic University in Public Administration. Master in Public Administration.
Career. According to the official biography, he began his professional career in 1977 at the Kharkov Miner's Light Plant. From 1980, he worked for over ten years in state enterprises in the city.
1992-1994 - Head of the production and trade company Akceptor.
In 1994-1999 - Chairman of the Board of JSC NPK-Holding.
1999-2001 - First Deputy Director of the subsidiary Trade House Gas Ukraine.
2001-2006 - President of JSC with foreign investment NPK-Holding.
In April-May 2002 - Secretary of the City Council in Kharkiv.
In 2002-2006 - President of JSC with foreign investment NPK-Holding.
Since April 2006 - Secretary of the City Council in Kharkiv. In 2006, Kernes also led the election campaign of the candidate for the position of the mayor of Kharkiv, Mikhail Dobkin.
From March 2010 - Acting Mayor of Kharkiv (after the appointment of Kharkiv Mayor Mikhail Dobkin as head of the Kharkiv Oblast State Administration).
Three-time deputy in the Kharkiv City Council (since 1998).
In 2006, he was elected to the Kharkiv City Council on the party list of the Regions Party, a member of the Regions Party. He was an active participant in Mikhail Dobkin's election campaign for the mayoral election in Kharkiv.
Since November 2010 - Mayor of Kharkiv. Chairman of the Kharkiv City Party Organization of the Regions Party.
In the fall of 2015, Kernes was re-elected mayor of Kharkiv in the local elections, winning in the first round with 65.8% of the votes.
In the early parliamentary elections of 2019, he ran as a deputy from the Opposition Platform, No. 4 on the list. Ultimately, the Opposition Platform did not overcome the 5% threshold in the elections to the Verkhovna Rada.
In 2020, Kernes won the local elections for mayor of Kharkiv with a result of 60.34% of the votes.
Assassination Attempt. On April 28, 2014, an assassination attempt was made on the mayor of Kharkiv, Gennadiy Kernes - during a run, he suffered a gunshot wound to the back. He was treated in Israel. The assassination attempt is linked to his political activities.
Court Proceedings. In March 2014, Kernes faced accusations of illegal detention, torture, and threats to murder activists of the Kharkiv Euromaidan. The Pechersk District Court in Kyiv partially imposed a travel ban. However, court hearings against Kernes are constantly postponed for various reasons.
Awards. Order of the Chairman of the Kharkiv Oblast Administration 'Slobodist Glory', Order 'Glory to Fidelity to the Motherland' III degree, International Academy for Popularity and Quality of Goods and Services 'Golden Fortune', commemorative medal '60 years of the Battle of Kursk' from the National Charitable Fund 'Eternal Glory to the Heroes', honorary badge from the Kharkiv Regional Committee of the International Union of Ukrainian War Veterans 'For active participation in the veteran movement' and others.
Doctor of Public Administration. In August 2013, he defended his dissertation on the topic 'Mechanisms of the Influence of the Regional Elite on the State Administration of Ukraine'.
Family. He has three children.
Death. On September 16, 2020, Gennadiy Kernes was taken to Charité Hospital in Berlin for treatment of COVID-19. On December 17, Gennadiy Kernes passed away at the Charité in Berlin from complications following a coronavirus infection.
