Place of birth. Education. Born in the village of Semenovka, Cherkasy region. After school, he entered the Kyiv Higher Military Command School named after Frunze, where he studied for three years in the intelligence faculty. In 1996, he graduated from Kyiv State Economic University. Candidate of Economic Sciences (2001).

Assets and wealth. In addition to Delta Bank, Lagun is attributed control over the first Ukrainian collection company Credit Collection Group (CCG) he created, the insurance company Brama Zhittia, the open (non-state) pension fund Delta, and several public investment funds managed by KUA Delta-Capital. In addition, in 2007, Lagun founded a network of mortgage supermarkets T.O.C.H.K.A and established a development company Europe, which, according to media reports, is implementing the cottage village project 'Olympic-Park' near Kyiv.
In August 2007, the millionaire acquired a 100% stake in the Belarusian ATOM Bank, with which he planned, as with his Ukrainian creation, to rapidly occupy up to 25% of the consumer lending market.
In 2008, the businessman first appeared in the lists of the richest Ukrainians. In February, the magazine Focus estimated the financier's fortune at $410 million and placed him 64th in its TOP-130 list of domestic tycoons. After five months, the publication Korrespondent reported that Lagun's wealth had grown to $524 million, landing him at 39th place on the list of 50 richest Ukrainians.
At the end of 2007, business press reported that key shareholders (primarily referring to Lagun himself) allegedly considered the possible sale of the entire Delta financial group, valuing it at $1 billion.
As of the end of 2008, such a deal did not take place, but the media were filled with reports that Lagun intended to acquire the troubled Prominvestbank. Moreover, according to one version, actions in this direction were allegedly being taken not only in personal interests but also in the interests of billionaires Pinchuk and Dmytro Firtash.
The main financial asset of the millionaire was registered on February 9, 2006 and received a license from the National Bank of Ukraine on April 20, 2006. The bank was created, as noted on the financial institution's website, 'to meet the mass demand for consumer loans'.
Key partners of the bank in establishing sales channels included trade networks Foxtrot, MegaMax, Domotekhnika, City.com, Mobilochka, and others.
In just two years, it significantly ousted such major players in the domestic consumer lending market as PrivatBank, Nadra Bank, PravexBank, and others. It is now among the top three leaders, holding about 25% of the total volume of consumer loans issued by banks.
In 2010, the banker changed the business strategy, deciding that Delta Bank should become a universal bank. In the same year, as a result of a competition, the credit portfolio of retail and corporate clients of LLC 'Ukrprombank' was acquired. This allowed Delta Bank to quickly enter the corporate segment.
In mid-2011, Nikolai Lagun attracted a very powerful partner in the face of the American company Cargill. The shares of Delta Bank were distributed as follows - 70% with Lagun and the rest with Cargill.
At the end of 2011, Delta Bank purchased a credit portfolio for sale from UkrSibbank, with a nominal value of 4.8 billion UAH.
In 2013, three deals were completed by Nikolai Lagun's group for the purchase of assets of banks such as Kreditprombank (20th place by assets in the banking system), Svedbank (assets - 5.6 billion), and Astra Bank (1.85 billion UAH).
In 2014, he acquired Marfin Bank.
As of June 2014, in terms of assets (61.5 billion UAH as of 01.07.2014), Delta Bank ranked 2nd among non-state Ukrainian banks and 4th in the overall ranking. In terms of the deposit portfolio of individuals (21.9 billion UAH as of 01.07.2014), Delta Bank was third in the ranking of Ukrainian banks. For the first half of 2014, Delta Bank's profit amounted to 192.9 million UAH.
In December 2014, cases of payment delays in Delta Bank increased due to liquidity problems, subsequently, restrictions were imposed on cash withdrawals at the bank. The reason was attributed to the non-repayment of loans by a significant number of clients, primarily from the ATO zone and occupied Crimea. According to Nikolai Lagun, Delta Bank received a loan from the NBU for 1 billion UAH to stabilize the situation.
In March 2015, the National Bank of Ukraine classified JSC Delta Bank as insolvent, and temporary administration was introduced in the bank. On October 5, the NBU decided to revoke the bank's license and liquidate the bank.
In November 2019, the NBU named the largest debtors, with Nikolai Lagun's debts on refinancing loans reaching 6 billion UAH. On December 12, the court arrested Lagun's assets for 690 million UAH, satisfying the complaint of the Deposit Guarantee Fund for Individuals for recovery of damages from him totaling 691.3 million UAH.
In August 2020, Nikolai Lagun was informed of suspicion of evading taxes of particularly large amounts' (part 3 of article 212 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
Political experiments. In the 2002 elections, Lagun ran for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as part of the 'Team of the Abundant Generation' block (under #31 on the electoral list). At that time, the owner of UkrSotsBank, whose treasury was managed by Lagun, and the head of the COP block was Valeriy Khoroshkovskiy, who in December 2007 headed the State Customs Service of Ukraine. The COP block did not manage to overcome the 3% electoral threshold.
Awards. In 2006 and 2008, he won the 'Person of the Year' contest in the 'Financier of the Year' nomination. He took first place in the 'Consumer Lending' nomination of the 'TOP-100. Best TOP-Managers of Ukraine' rating by the publication Invest Gazeta.
A year later, Lagun won the national stage of the International 'Entrepreneur of the Year' competition, organized by 'Ernst & Young'. Within the framework of this project, he took first place in the 'Fast-Growing Business' nomination.
Based on the results of 2012, in the framework of the All-Ukrainian annual UKRAINIAN BANKER AWARDS by the publication Investgazeta, the entrepreneur took 1st place in the 'Colleagues Recognition' nomination and 3rd place in the results of 2013. Also in 2012, the newspaper Kommersant awarded Nikolai Lagun the 1st position in the 'Best Bank Manager of 2012' nomination and the 2nd position in the same nomination based on the results of 2013.
Based on the results of 2013, ID Galitskie Contracts recognized the banker as the 'Best Bank Manager with Ukrainian Capital of 2013' and 'Most Recognizable Banker of 2013'.
