Hassan Rouhani, born as Hassan Feridon - Iranian politician and Shia theologian, seventh President of Iran. Member of the Council of Experts since 1999, member of the Expediency Council since 1991, member of the Supreme National Security Council since 1989, and head of the Center for Strategic Studies since 1992.
Place of Birth. Education. Hassan Rouhani was born on November 12, 1948, in the city of Sorkheh in the Semnan province in northern Iran. He began his religious education in 1960. He received his religious education in the holy city of Shia - Qom. He started his studies at the University of Tehran in 1969 and received a Bachelor's degree in law in 1972. In 1995, he defended his Master's thesis at the University of Glasgow on the topic 'Islamic Legislation based on the Experiences of Iran'. In 1999, he earned a doctoral degree in state law from the same university.
He learned foreign languages. He speaks Russian, Arabic, French, German, and English.
Political Career. 25-year-old Rouhani joined the Islamic Revolutionary movement. Soon he began to promote Khomeini nationwide. Rouhani was imprisoned several times for anti-government statements. Eventually, he fled to Paris with Khomeini. In 1978, the Islamic Revolution started in Iran, Khomeini returned to Tehran, and Rouhani followed him. In 1980, he was elected to parliament, where he served for 20 years and was both deputy speaker and head of the Security Committee.
Since 1999, he has been a member of the Council of Experts, since 1991 a member of the Expediency Council, since 1989 a member of the Supreme National Security Council, and head of the Center for Strategic Studies since 1992. Deputy speaker of the Iranian parliament, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council from 1989 to 2005. In this capacity, he led the negotiating team for the nuclear program during the EU-3 negotiations (with representatives from the UK, France, and Germany).
On May 7, 2013, he filed documents to register as a presidential candidate for the Iranian elections in 2013. He promised to create a 'Charter of Human Rights', improve the economy, and enhance relations with Western countries.
On June 14, 2013, the first round of presidential elections in Iran took place, in which Rouhani won. He received more than half (50.71%, 18,613,329) of the votes, making a runoff unnecessary. On August 3, 2013, the inauguration of the newly elected president took place.
In May 2017, he announced his candidacy for a second term. On May 19, 2017, the presidential elections in Iran were held. Rouhani received about 57% of the votes (23.53 million) and was thus re-elected for a second term.
Approach in International Relations. Under Hassan Rouhani, the agreement on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action regarding the Iranian nuclear issue was signed in the summer of 2015. The signing and fulfillment of the initial conditions of this agreement led to the lifting of a number of international sanctions against Iran.
In early 2016, he made official visits to Italy and France - the first visit of an Iranian president to Europe in 16 years.
On January 26, 2016, he was received by Pope Francis at the Vatican. The Pope last received the President of Iran in 1999 - John Paul II received Mohammad Khatami.
Family. Hassan Rouhani married his cousin Sahebeh Erabi (Rouhani), who was six years younger than him when he was about 20 years old, and they have five children.
