Place of Birth. Education. Bernard 'Bernie' Sanders was born in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He studied at Brooklyn College. In 1964, he graduated from the University of Chicago and moved to Vermont the same year.

Career. He initially worked as a carpenter and journalist, starting his political career in the early 70s when he joined the Liberty Union Party.

In 1972 and 1974, he ran as an independent candidate for the US Senate without success. In 1972, 1976, and 1986, he also unsuccessfully ran as an independent candidate for the office of Governor of Vermont.

1981-1989 - Mayor of Burlington, Vermont. During his first term, the local Progressive Coalition was formed (the predecessor of the Vermont Progressive Party), which supported Sanders.

1991-2007 - Member of the US House of Representatives as an independent politician, although he is politically closer to the Democratic Party. He advocates for democratic socialism and the Scandinavian model of social democracy. He is the longest-serving independent member of the US Congress.

Since 2007, he has been the US Senator from Vermont, reelected in 2012 with 71% support for a term ending in January 2019.

From 2013 to 2015, he was the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs.

On April 30, 2015, he announced his candidacy for the Democratic Party primaries. Supported by the Occupy Wall Street movement, Sanders based his campaign on the concept of a 'political revolution' in the USA. Unlike other presidential candidates, he firmly rejected corporate funding for his campaign and accepted only private donations from voters.

On February 9, 2016, Sanders became the first non-Christian in US history to win a primary of one of the two major parties in New Hampshire.

On July 12, 2016, he announced his withdrawal from the presidential race.

On February 19, 2019, he stated in an interview with Radio Vermont that he would participate in the 2020 presidential elections. The ideas Sanders wants to implement as head of state include plans for the introduction of universal healthcare, setting a minimum wage of $15, and reducing student debt.

On April 8, 2020, Bernie Sanders ended his campaign in the context of the growing COVID-19 epidemic. On April 13, he supported Joe Biden's candidacy.

Family. Married, has four children and seven grandchildren. His brother Larry Sanders is a British politician and a member of the Green Party of England and Wales.
