David-Maria Sassoli - Italian journalist and politician, President of the European Parliament (since July 3, 2019).

Place of Birth. Education. He was born on May 30, 1956, in Florence. Son of Mimmo Sassoli, an activist from the left wing of the Democratic Party, who gathered around Giorgio La Pira and Nicola Pistelli (he also edited 'Il Popolo' and 'La Discussione'). He graduated from the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Florence.

Career. David Sassoli began his journalistic career at small newspapers and news agencies. He worked in the Rome office of the daily newspaper 'Il Giorno' and specialized in political reporting for seven years.

On July 3, 1986, he joined the professional association of journalists and worked from 1992 as a special correspondent for RAI on the TG3 channel. At the same time, he co-hosted the programs 'Il rosso e il nero' and 'Tempo reale' with Michele Santoro.

From 2006 to 2009, he was the deputy director of the TV channel TG1.

Political Career. In 2009, he was elected to the European Parliament on the Democratic Party list.

On June 17, 2009, he was elected head of the DP delegation in the European Parliament.

In 2013, he participated in the primaries of the center-left aimed at nominating a common candidate for the mayoral elections in Rome (with a result of 26%, he finished second after Ignazio Marino).

In 2014, he was re-elected to the European Parliament, again on the DP list, and received one of the 7 seats allocated to his party in the central electoral district.

On July 1, 2014, he was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament, receiving 393 votes from deputies.

In January 2017, he was re-elected Vice-President of the European Parliament.

On July 3, 2019, he was elected President of the European Parliament. In the second round of voting, he received 345 votes. A minimum of 334 deputy votes was required for election.

Family. Sassoli's wife is Alessandra, and they have two children - Giulio and Livia.

Hobbies. Sassoli is interested in classical music, Roman history, and gardening, which he pursues at his country house in Sutri and ascribes political significance in contrast to Berlusconi: 'I plant plants and cultivate the soil, he just buys them.'

Death. David-Maria Sassoli died on January 11, 2022, in a hospital in Aviano, Italy.
