Elisabeth Mary 'Liz' Truss - English politician of the Conservative Party, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. She served as Secretary of State for International Trade (2019-2021), Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in the first and second Cabinets of David Cameron (2014-2016), Secretary of State for Justice and the first woman to be Lord Chancellor in history in the first Cabinet of Theresa May (2016-2017), Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom (2021-2022).

Place of Birth. Education. Elisabeth Truss spent her childhood in Leeds, Yorkshire. She attended a state school in Leeds (Roundhay School) and then studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Merton College, University of Oxford, where she led the Liberal Democrats branch.

Career. After graduating in Finance, she worked for international companies such as Shell and Cable & Wireless.

In 2008, she became the Deputy Director of the Reform Analytical Center, which developed plans to involve the private sector in public service.

Political Career. In 1996, she joined the Conservative Party and chaired the Conservative Association of the Lewisham Deptford constituency in London from 1998 to 2000. In 2001, she unsuccessfully attempted to enter the House of Commons in Hammersmith (Ceremonial District of West Yorkshire), in 2005 she repeated the attempt in the same district, but in the Calder Valley constituency (again without success). Ultimately, the parliamentary elections of May 6, 2010 led to her success in the North West Norfolk constituency (County of Norfolk).

In September 2012, Prime Minister David Cameron appointed 50 new members to his first Cabinet, including Elisabeth Truss as parliamentary assistant to the Education Secretary.

On July 15, 2014, Cameron announced another series of Cabinet reshuffles, including the promotion of Elisabeth Truss to Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

On May 7, 2015, general elections took place, in which Truss received 50.9% of the votes in her previous constituency and retained her parliamentary mandate.

On May 11, 2015, David Cameron formed his second Cabinet and retained Elisabeth Truss as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

On July 14, 2016, she became the Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor in the first Cabinet of Theresa May.

In April 2017, the Cabinet of Theresa May requested that Elizabeth Truss be relieved of her duties as Lord Chancellor and that the position be held separately from that of the Justice Secretary.

On June 11, 2017, she was appointed Financial Secretary to the Treasury in Theresa May's second Cabinet.

On July 24, 2019, she was appointed as Foreign Secretary in Boris Johnson's Cabinet and also became the Chair of the UK Trade Committee.

On September 10, 2019, following Amber Rudd's resignation, Truss was appointed as Minister for Women and Equality in addition to her previous roles.

On September 15, 2021, she was appointed Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom as part of a series of personnel changes in Johnson’s second Cabinet.

On September 5, 2022, Liz Truss was elected as the leader of the Conservative Party of Britain. On September 6, Liz Truss visited Balmoral Castle, the Scottish residence of Queen Elizabeth II, where she was invited to form a new government.

On October 20, 2022, Liz Truss resigned as Prime Minister.

Books, Publications. She is the author and co-author of several articles and books, including After the Coalition (2011) and Britannia Unchained (2012).

Family. In 2000, Elisabeth Truss married finance director Hugh O'Leary, and the couple has two children.
