Date of Birth: 23.11.1935
Place of Birth. Education. Born in the village of Markovtsy in the Letichiv district of the Chmelnytskyi region. His name in the world is Viktor Markijanovitsch Sabodan. In 1954, after graduating from high school, he entered the Odessa Theological Seminary. In 1962, he graduated from the Leningrad Theological Academy with a Candidate of Theology degree. Master of Theology. In 1979, he defended his dissertation 'Ecclesiology in Domestic Theology' at the Moscow Theological Academy. Professor at the Moscow Theological Academy.
Also has a legal education. Speaks French.
Clerical Career. On June 14, 1962, he was ordained as a deacon, on the 15th as a priest, and on August 26, he took monastic vows.
At the Odessa Theological Seminary, where he was sent to teach, he was the deputy rector and at the same time the secretary of the Odessa Diocesan Administration.
In 1965, after completing his post-graduate studies at the Moscow Theological Academy, he was appointed rector of the Odessa Theological Seminary and elevated to the rank of archimandrite.
In 1966, he was appointed deputy head of the Russian Spiritual Mission in Jerusalem, bishop of Zvenigorod, vicar of the Moscow diocese, representative of the Russian Orthodox Church at the World Council of Churches in Geneva, and head of the Geneva parish in honor of the birth of the Mother of God.
On July 8, 1966, he was ordained as a bishop.
In 1968, he was appointed to the chair of Pereyaslav-Khmelnytskyi and appointed vicar bishop of the Metropolitan of Kiev and Galich, Patriarchal Exarch of Ukraine.
In 1969, he was appointed to the chair of Chernihiv and Nizhyn and at the same time appointed temporary administrator of the Sumy eparchy.
From December to April 1973 - responsible editor of the Orthodox Exarchate of Ukraine's magazine Orthodox Messenger.
On April 18, 1973, he was appointed bishop of Dmitrov, vicar of the Moscow diocese, rector of the Moscow Theological Academy and Seminary. In the same year, he was elevated to Archbishop in September.
On June 16, 1982, he was appointed Metropolitan of the Diocese of Rostov-on-Don and Novotcherkassk.
On December 30, 1987, he was appointed head of the affairs of the Moscow Patriarchate and permanent member of the Holy Synod.
On May 27, 1992, he was elected by the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church as Metropolitan of Kiev and All Ukraine, the head of the UOC. The Russian Orthodox Church awarded Metropolitan Vladimir the title 'His Beatitude' and the right to wear two panagias and offer Christ during the service.
In March 1996, he was elected Honorary Head of the United Nations International Committee for celebrating the 2000th anniversary of Christ's birth. He was also elected a full member of the International Academy of Informatics (within the framework of the UN Ecological and Social Council).
Awards. Hero of Ukraine. Has high awards from the Russian Orthodox Church and many local Orthodox Churches.
Death. On the morning of July 5, 2014, Vladimir died at the age of 79 after a long illness. On that day, the coffin with the body of the metropolitan was brought to the residence in the Kyiv cave monastery of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where the head of the Kyiv Metropolitan Office, Bishop of Chernivtsi and Bukovina, Onufriy, held a memorial liturgy.
