Biography
Date of Birth: 26.06.1944
Place of Birth. Education. Born in the Orel region (Russia) as the son of village teachers. Graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Orel Pedagogical Institute in 1969. In 1980, he joined the Academy of Sciences of the Central Committee of the CPSU and defended his dissertation on problems of the development of large cities.
Career. Served in Germany in the intelligence sector.
He began his career as a teacher at a school. Then he became a lecturer in higher mathematics at the university.
He was the head of the Komsomol and party organizations in Orel.
From 1983, he held a responsible position in the Central Committee of the CPSU. He dealt with issues of state building, humanitarian and ideological questions.
In 1990-1991, he was at the forefront of the founding of the CPRF. He was one of the authors of the appeal 'Word to the People', which proposed measures to prevent the collapse of the USSR.
After August 1991, Sjuganow was actively involved in the revival of the CPRF. At the founding congress in February 1993, he was elected chairman of the Central Committee of the CPRF and has since been re-elected multiple times.
Since January 1994, as the faction leader, he has led the CPRF faction in the State Duma of the Russian Federation for five legislative periods. He represents Russia in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
He participated in the presidential elections in 1996 (receiving 40.31% of the votes), 2000 (29.21%), 2008 (17.72%), and 2012 (17.18%). The first time he lost to Boris Yeltsin, the second to Vladimir Putin, the third to Dmitry Medvedev, and the fourth again to Putin.
On February 23-24, 2013, he was re-elected for another term as Chairman of the CPRF with an overwhelming majority of delegates' votes at the XV Congress of the CPRF.
In December 2017, at the XVII Congress of the CPRF, he personally proposed to nominate businessman Pavel Grudinin as a presidential candidate while he led his own campaign team.
Since 2022, he has been under personal sanctions from the EU, the USA, and Japan due to the widespread Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Views. He actively advocated for the repeal of the Belavezha Accords by the State Duma, which led to the liquidation of the USSR. He supports the creation of a union state of Russia and Belarus, and the integration processes in the former USSR territories. He is the chairman of the international alliance of communist parties operating in the CIS and Baltic republics.
He initiated the holding of a popular referendum on the return of natural riches to the Russian people, to increase minimum wages and pensions to a level above the subsistence minimum, to limit the payment for housing and communal services to 10% of the total family income, and to nationalize and transfer strategic sectors of the economy into public ownership.
Sjuganow firmly supported the annexation of Crimea by Russia. He advocated for the 'federalization of Ukraine', for the recognition of the results of 'popular referendums', and for the granting of the status of the official language Russian, he provided constant moral support for pro-Russian separatists and the CPRF faction in the Verkhovna Rada.
In July 2014, the Main Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine opened a criminal case against Gennadi Sjuganow for possible large-scale financing of actions against the sovereignty of Ukraine, changing its state structure or borders (Part 4 Article 110-2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code).
