U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports to the United States without exceptions, reports The Washington Post.
During the signing ceremony, Trump said:
This is a big deal - to make America wealthy again.According to the president, his actions are aimed at supporting domestic metallurgical production and increasing employment. The White House administration emphasizes limiting China's capabilities in the American market, although most metals in the U.S. come from other countries.
As a result of the tariff, costs for manufacturers using industrial metals will increase. These costs contradict Trump's promises to reduce the cost of living.
Previously, Trump had already stated his intention to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum. The European Commission considers this move 'illegal and counterproductive'. Olaf Scholz, the Chancellor of Germany, promised that Germany could quickly respond to any actions by the U.S.
