The President of the United States, Donald Trump, is delaying the organization of a meeting with Russian leader Putin, aimed at stopping hostilities. Valeriy Chaly, the former ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, believes that Trump is excessively yawning before Russia to lure them to the negotiating table. He emphasizes that such an approach could have negative consequences.

Diplomacy is a process in which one must 'pet the dog until the muzzle is put on.'

A similar tactic was used by Volodymyr Zelensky, who stated that he would meet with Putin and resolve everything. Chaly believes that this approach could be dangerous for Trump, as Putin might exploit this situation for his benefit.

Chaly emphasizes that the statements being made now will have consequences in the future, and some positions may change in the opposite direction. He urges Ukrainians to gain access to the American government to maintain Ukrainian positions unchanged.

Moreover, Chaly stresses that it is important to pay attention to the real actions of the USA, not just their statements. One of these actions involves returning the staffing of embassies to previous levels after the expulsion of diplomats. However, Chaly notes that this does not mean the lifting of sanctions or cessation of weapons supplies.

Despite this, Chaly sees Trump's active interest in Europe, Ukraine, and the war in the East as a positive aspect that may be underestimated.
