Hungary lost the right to billion-euro aid from the European Union.
Hungary lost the opportunity to receive 1.04 billion euros in aid from the European Union due to the failure to implement reforms in the legal sector by the end of 2024. The funds were allocated to support weak regions. However, the European Commission concluded that Hungary is violating democratic standards and EU values, and froze government funding in 2022. This concerned anti-corruption, bribery, conflicts of interest, political party financing, and media freedom.
Overall, the European Commission blocked about 19 billion euros intended for Hungary, including additional aid to combat the consequences of the pandemic. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban threatened to veto the next seven-year EU budget if the frozen funds are not unblocked by Brussels.
