Mattress Cleaning with Baking Soda: An Economical Way to Get Rid of Dirt and Odors

According to ТСН: During use, mattresses accumulate various contaminants: dust, dust mites, sweat and grease residues, as well as unpleasant odors.

Regular mattress cleaning is important for its longevity and maintaining hygiene in the bedroom. Many people believe that professional expensive services are necessary, but experienced homemakers know that there is a simple and safe way to clean – using baking soda.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a natural and effective absorbent that can absorb dirt, moisture, and neutralize unpleasant odors. This cleaning method is dry, which is particularly important as excessive moisture can lead to mold development.

How to Clean a Mattress with Baking Soda

Before you start, remove all bedding and thoroughly vacuum the mattress surface, paying attention to seams and corners.

Sprinkle baking soda on the mattress, spreading it evenly in a thin layer. The soda will absorb moisture and odors, helping to soften the sweat and grease residues. To enhance deodorization, a few drops of essential oil, such as lavender or tea tree, can be added.

Leave the mattress for 2-3 hours, or preferably overnight. During this time, the soda will perform its function, absorbing unwanted particles and refreshing the mattress.

After that, thoroughly vacuum the mattress, removing the remaining soda, especially paying attention to the seams where dirt may remain.

How to Clean a Mattress from Stubborn Stains

If there are still stubborn stains on the mattress, dry cleaning may not be sufficient, and wet processing with proven methods will be required:

  • To remove stains from tea, coffee, or juices, prepare a paste of baking soda and table vinegar or lemon juice. Mix the ingredients until it reaches a paste consistency, apply to the stained areas, and leave for a while. Then gently wipe the mattress with a damp cloth.

  • For protein-based stains (such as blood), mix 2 tablespoons of baking soda with 240 ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply the solution to the stain, let it foam, and then remove the residue with a clean damp cloth and dry the treated area well.

Regardless of the chosen method, always ensure that the mattress is completely dry after wet processing. Do not cover it until it is fully dry. Regular cleaning with this simple and eco-friendly method will extend the life of your mattress and ensure a healthy atmosphere in the bedroom.

Taking care of the mattress is not only about comfort but also about health. Proper hygiene of the sleeping area reduces the risks of allergies and unpleasant odors, which in turn ensures a sound and healthy sleep. So do not neglect these simple tips and take care of your sleeping place!
