Expert explains how to save a Christmas tree from a cat: simple tips

According to ТСН: A tree decorated with ornaments and a tall structure can become a real 'playground' for cats during the winter holidays. An animal behavior specialist shared recommendations on how cat owners can keep their tree intact.

Expert's Advice

Shani, a cat behavior expert, noted in a TikTok video that it's important to take measures to prevent unwanted situations. According to her, cats perceive space vertically, making the tree an attractive climbing object for them.

She advises setting up a tall cat tree (at least 1.5 meters), which will be a safe alternative for cats. If the animal actively uses it, that behavior should be encouraged.

The cat tree can be placed next to the Christmas tree, but not so close that the cat can reach the ornaments. It's also important to securely anchor the tree to prevent it from falling.

Protecting the Tree

For live trees, Shani recommends covering the water container with a special lid. Valuable ornaments are better placed high to keep them out of reach of the animal. Some owners even hang bells that can scare cats away with their sharp sounds.

If cats use the trunk of the tree for scratching, it can be wrapped in foil, as its texture is displeasing to most cats. In addition, some owners cover the lower branches with foil or place pine cones under the tree, which are unpleasant for cat paws.

Shani also emphasizes that there are special sprays with scents that cats avoid, and these can be used to treat the lower part of the tree and the surrounding area.

It's important to hide all wires and lights to prevent injuries, and remember that the cat is not 'misbehaving on purpose' but is acting according to its natural instincts.

In the comments under the video, cat owners shared their experiences: some praise foil, while others claim their four-legged friends are not deterred by it. Some admit that their cat plays with the foil and finds a way to reach the tree despite all barriers.

Even the prettiest tree can be hazardous for a cat if several important points are not considered. Experts emphasize the details to pay attention to before the holidays to ensure the celebration goes smoothly without unpleasant surprises.
