Bloggers and Media Outlets Fined for Promoting Online Gambling

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's gambling regulator, PlayCity, has imposed fines totaling nearly 5 million hryvnias (approximately $125,000) on several bloggers and a media outlet for illegally advertising online casinos. These penalties, now listed in the Unified Register of Debtors, signal a significant tightening of enforcement for Ukraine's gambling advertising laws, which have been in effect since the legalization of the market in 2020.

According to the register, the total debt is close to 5 million UAH. In early January, two separate proceedings were initiated against blogger Karina Kuchmenko, known online as Simbochka, resulting in fines of 4.8 million UAH and 24,000 UAH respectively. In total, seven bloggers and one media company are currently challenging PlayCity's decisions in court, seeking to have the fines overturned.

Future Changes to Gambling Advertising Laws

The regulatory framework is set to evolve further, with new legislative initiatives scheduled to change the penalty system for illegal casino advertising in 2026. This indicates the regulator's ongoing efforts to refine its control mechanisms. Notably, gambling ads are currently only permitted in media outlets with a '21+' age restriction status, a measure designed to limit exposure to younger audiences.

The situation underscores the heightened scrutiny from Ukrainian authorities on the gambling sector and the increasing legal risks for influencers and publishers who violate advertising rules. These actions serve as a clear warning to all industry participants about the critical importance of adhering to both legal standards and ethical practices when promoting gambling services.
