Was Kira Muratova a Ukrainian director? New quarrel on the network.


The Lincoln Center's film society has announced its spring season program, which will include a retrospective of Kira Muratova's films. The program will feature 16 films created by her as a director and actress. The program's curator, Ivan Kozlenko, noted that among the premieres will be restored versions of some of her films and new scans of others. However, the program has sparked a wave of discussions and criticism, as not everyone agrees that Kira Muratova is a Ukrainian figure.
Ukrainian linguist Yuri Shevchuk commented on this situation, stating that Muratova was a Russian director who did not hide her contempt for Ukraine. He also supported the idea of naming the program 'Kira Muratova, the director who lived her whole life in a country she did not notice.'
Ivan Kozlenko reacted very sharply to Shevchuk's criticism, responding to him in the comments. People were also divided regarding Shevchuk's assessment; one half supported him, while the other criticized his views.
Kira Muratova, born in Romania, is a prominent Soviet and Ukrainian actress, director, and screenwriter. Her work was outstanding in Soviet cinema. She created several of the most significant films, such as 'The Change of Fate' and 'Astenic Syndrome.' Furthermore, her works were included in the lists of the 100 best Ukrainian films.
