Experts explain whether it is necessary to wash new clothes before wearing them.
According to ТСН: Often, along with the joy of purchasing new clothes comes anxiety: is it safe to wear them without washing? Experts in the textile industry have a clear answer to this question.
Should you wash new clothes before wearing them?
In most cases, it is advisable to wash new clothes, especially if they are in close contact with the skin. According to Frances Cozen, a senior lecturer in fiber science at Cornell University, the first wash helps remove residue of manufacturing chemicals, dyes, and dirt that may accumulate during production and transportation. "Fabrics and clothing go through many hands — and often through different countries," she notes.
Even new items can contain unwanted substances. "Textiles can hold onto residual chemicals that remain after processing, as well as starch components used to maintain their shape during packing or transportation," adds Nomi Dale Kleinman, head of the department of fabric and surface design at the Fashion Institute of Technology.
If the clothing has been in the store display area, there is a risk of additional contamination from people who have come into contact with it. Research shows that bacteria, fungi, and viruses can remain on the fabric from several days to a few weeks.
Washing also helps 'soften' new clothes and makes them more comfortable. "The first wash relieves the tension of the fibers that occurs from stretching during production, which is especially noticeable in cotton items not labeled as pre-shrunk," explains Cozen.
Which items can be skipped for washing immediately?
Experts point out some exceptions. Items that do not come into direct contact with the body or require delicate care do not need to be washed. "I do not wash before wearing clothes that are recommended to be dry cleaned, as well as sweaters that are worn over shirts," says Cozen.
What can happen if you do not wash your clothes?
If your skin is not sensitive, you may not feel any consequences. However, chemical residues or microbes can still trigger a reaction — rashes, redness, or itching, especially in those with sensitive skin or allergies. Special attention should be paid to dyes. Intense dark shades, such as denim blue, can stain the skin, light clothing, or furniture, which is unlikely to please anyone.
How to properly wash new clothes?
Before washing, always read the label. If it says “Dry clean only,” then home washing could only damage the item. To make clothes last longer, Kleinman advises washing them in cold water and drying at low temperature or air drying. Hot water and high temperatures in the dryer contribute to fading, stretching, and shrinking of the fabric.
Therefore, by following these simple recommendations, you can ensure comfort and safety when wearing new clothes. Washing before first use not only removes residues of unwanted substances but also makes fabrics softer. This can help avoid potential unpleasant skin reactions and prolong the life of your new purchase.
