January 6: Who are the Three Kings and why do they bring gifts to children.
According to ТСН: On January 6, we celebrate the three wise men from the East who came to pay homage to the infant Jesus. In many countries, they are believed to bring gifts to children.
Who are the Three Kings
The three wise men are usually called:Melchior, Gaspar and Balthazar. According to biblical tradition, they saw the Bethlehem star that led them to the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
Each of them brought a symbolic gift:
Gold — a symbol of royal dignity;
Frankincense — a symbol of divine nature;
Myrrh — a symbol of human fate and suffering.
Although the Gospel does not specify the number of magi, the three gifts formed the traditional image of the Three Kings.
How it is celebrated in different countries
The Feast of the Three Kings is solemnly celebrated in Western and Southern European countries as well as in Latin America.
In Spain, festivities are held on the eve, January 5, called Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos. The Three Kings travel through cities, greeting children and throwing sweets. That evening, children leave shoes or boxes by the door, along with water and treats for the camels of the Three Kings, and in the morning, they find gifts.
In France and Belgium, a king cake — galette des rois — is baked for the celebration. A small figurine is hidden inside, and whoever finds it becomes the “king of the day.”
In Poland, January 6 is an official holiday, and believers sometimes write the initials of the Three Kings in chalk on the doors as a symbol of blessing for the home.
What they bring to children
In many countries, The Three Kings are considered the main gift-givers during the holidays rather than Santa Claus. Well-behaved children receive gifts and sweets, while naughty ones get symbolic sweet black coal or black candies as a reminder of their misbehavior.
What this holiday symbolizes
In Christianity, the Feast of the Three Kings symbolizes the manifestation of Jesus Christ to the whole world, not just one people. The adoration of the wise men from the East signifies that the newborn Messiah has come for all humanity.
The Feast of the Three Kings demonstrates the depth of Christian teaching about the universality of God’s grace. This day prompts reflections on the importance of unity and community, bringing people together through traditions and gifts that hold deep symbolic meaning. The celebration reveals the diversity of cultural customs that, while differing, are based on shared values of kindness and generosity.
