Cucumbers in August Under Threat: How to Protect Plants from Diseases in 3 Steps.
In August, cucumbers are particularly susceptible to various fungal diseases, which is why care must be taken for the plants in this month. Experienced gardeners have shared what treatment should be applied to these vegetable plants at the end of summer to protect them from various diseases.
News.Live shares useful tips for gardeners.
How to Protect Cucumbers from Diseases
To protect cucumber plants from fungal diseases, one should use whey and ordinary iodine. This is because whey contains many amino acids and lactic acid bacteria. These elements form a thin protective film on the surface of the leaves, inhibiting the pathogens of mildew and downy mildew.
On the other hand, iodine is considered a strong antiseptic that disinfects the surface of the leaves. Additionally, it is a vital micronutrient that cucumbers absorb through their leaves. This activates the metabolic processes in the plants, strengthens the immune system, and makes cucumbers more resistant to various stress conditions.
How to Treat Cucumbers with Whey and Iodine
First, prepare a mixture of the following ingredients:
- Whey - one liter
- Iodine 5% - five to seven drops
- Water - ten liters
Mix the whey and iodine and then dilute the mixture in clean, room temperature stagnant water. Fill the resulting solution into a spray device and treat the cucumber plants with a fine mist, spraying the leaves on both sides.
Make sure to do this in the morning or evening to avoid sunburn on the wet leaves. Repeat this procedure with the cucumbers every ten or fourteen days, especially after rain.
