Putin May Seek Talks Only Under This Condition, Says Ukrainian Official Amid Russia’s Fuel Crisis and Unrest.
Mykhailo Podolyak’s Assessment of Russia’s Internal Turmoil
According to UATV: On June 17, Mykhailo Podolyak, an advisor to the Ukrainian President's Office, stated on the FREEДОМ television channel that international sanctions combined with domestic crises in Russia could eventually force President Vladimir Putin to negotiate. According to Podolyak, Russia is currently facing a severe fuel shortage, along with the potential for social unrest, including riots. These pressures are mounting as the war in Ukraine continues to strain the Russian economy.
Podolyak highlighted that 56 regions across Russia have already imposed major restrictions on gasoline and diesel supplies. This points to deep-seated problems in the country’s energy sector, which could have broader implications for national stability.
'It is physically impossible to hold rational talks with Putin' - Mykhailo Podolyak
He further argued that the only way to influence Putin is through elements of 'concrete physical fear.' This reflects his belief that tougher measures are essential to achieve any meaningful progress in negotiations. Consequently, the combination of internal Russian challenges and external sanctions may become a decisive factor in shaping future Ukraine-Russia relations.
How Domestic Challenges Could Reshape International Dynamics
Podolyak’s remarks suggest that Russia’s internal difficulties could increase pressure on the Kremlin in the international arena. Energy shortages and social instability may compel Russian leaders to reconsider their stance on the war in Ukraine. As a result, developments inside Russia hold the potential to significantly influence diplomatic efforts and the strategic calculations of both nations in the near future.
