Democratic Congressman Glenn Ivey urged Chuck Schumer to take more responsibility in negotiations in Washington or 'maybe he should step down.'
Ivey expressed his views on the Democratic leader in the Senate on Wednesday and expanded his demands of him, in light of the overall dissatisfaction with the party leadership's approach to countering President Donald Trump.
'If he can gather himself and stay on the right course regarding this vote, and we have a chance again, then we'll manage it. But if he does the same thing again when this bill comes up again in six months, we cannot afford that,' said Ivey.
He also expressed support for his party leader, New York Representative Hakeem Jeffries, who managed to convince everyone except one Democrat to vote against the Republican version of the budget. But at the same Time, Ivey stated that the split between the two party leaders is unacceptable and cannot happen again.
'We have a limited number of opportunities to counter the Trump administration and their actions,' continued Ivey. 'We cannot afford to miss this moment again.'
During his session, officials faced tough questions about the ability of Democrats to counter the Trump administration, as well as their capacity to fight for their constituents.
Some laughed when Ivey reiterated that the upcoming elections are the best chance for the party to narrow Trump's influence. This outraged some people who began leaving the meeting, saying they expected more specific plans.
Ivey simplified such assessments, noting that he understands his constituents' dissatisfaction but emphasized that there are limits for Democrats when they are in the minority in the House of Representatives.
Ivey is not the only Democratic leader in the House facing questions about supporting Schumer. Representative Delia Ramirez of Illinois responded 'yes' when her constituents asked if he should 'resign or step down,' Axios reports.
During the interview, Ivey praised several Democratic representatives for their active fight against Trump and pressure on party leadership. Among them were Representatives Jamie Raskin from Maryland, the highest-ranking Democrat in the House, as well as Representatives Gerry Connolly from Virginia, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York. Ivey acknowledged that not all of them display the 'aggressiveness and emotion' that the Democratic base expects, but the main thing is that they do everything possible to maintain their mandates.
