In the town of Whittier, located in Alaska, just 220 residents live in a 14-story building nestled among mountains and glaciers. This town is considered the strangest town in America.

History of the Town

Originally built by the U.S. military as a military harbor and supply base during World War II, Whittier has a history rooted in the military. The Begich Towers, a massive building, served as the headquarters for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during the Cold War. Now, the town has become a popular tourist destination.

The town is situated amid high mountains, and there are only a few ways in and out. Just a few years ago, the only way to reach the town was by rail through an old wartime tunnel, weather permitting. However, the tunnel has now been refurbished for vehicular traffic and provides a two-mile passage.

About the Town-Building

The town-building, Begich Towers, is now home to approximately 85% of the total population.

With 150 apartments in the complex, it was created so residents wouldn't have to step outside in the cold months. From the outside, the building looks unremarkable, but inside, it has all the necessary amenities: a church, post office, market, clinic, police department, video store, laundry, and school - all under one roof and just steps away from the elevator.

Additionally, the building is connected to a tunnel carved into the mountain. The only underground path to the town stretches through a four-kilometer one-way tunnel that closes at night.

'People think it's odd. If I had one word, I'd say it's magical,' says Dave Dickerson and his wife, Anna.

The residents' main occupation is fishing, which serves as their primary source of income.
