The Spaniards resorted to an unusual method against the influx of tourists.
In Spain, a group of activists held protests against the excessive number of tourists in the country, using water pistols. They are calling for changes in the economic model, which they believe harms the housing sector and the atmosphere of the cities.
«These sprayers mildly disturb tourists. Barcelona has been surrendered to tourists. This is a struggle to take back Barcelona for its residents», – stated one of the protest participants.
A protester explained that the rent for his accommodation has risen by 30%, as more and more apartments in the area are rented out to tourists for short stays. Demonstrations took place in Granada, San Sebastián, and on the island of Ibiza.
Participants in the rally in Barcelona held placards reading: «One more tourist, one less resident» and «Tourism kills Barcelona». Some beaches in Valencia were closed due to a mysterious substance on the sand, and tourists in Palma de Mallorca face fines for purchases from street vendors.
The protests in Spain are driven by residents' dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in the tourism industry and its impact on city life. Activists oppose the increasing opportunities for tourism at the expense of the local population and urban environment.
