Expert explained the main tasks for drone developers.
Drones with artificial intelligence can fix the shortcomings of Ukrainian drones
Over the past two and a half years of war, drones have fundamentally changed the combat actions in Ukraine. Currently, Russia's main advantage is the ability to suppress and intercept radio signals that connect Ukrainian drones with pilots. In the long term, artificial intelligence can fix everything.
Developers have several tasks - two important steps that a drone with artificial intelligence must be able to perform independently, writes the director of the project 'Nova Ukraine' at the Institute of Progressive Policy Tamara Yakobi for the New York Post.
The first task is navigation. The development of software for a miniature flight controller on board the drone is needed, which will know the planned route and be able to recognize the terrain below, directing the device to the target without the help of GPS or other means, the material says.
The second task is to teach AI to recognize targets and drop an explosive charge without a signal from the pilot on the ground, Yakobi said. The expert clarified that in Ukraine there is a startup DroneControl - one of the few that is working on solving these problems. Company manager Dmytro Saltovets claims that the Russians have several advantages in this direction:
'The Russians have more money. They have more powerful electronics, and they make larger drones, produced in large quantities at state-owned factories - within the framework of the Russian military-industrial complex'.
Yakobi specifies that DroneControl, in turn, is a small private company that works with a minimal budget and without 'contact' with the state. Therefore, engineers and programmers, driven by a sense of military duty, have to make do with what they have. The material discusses that elementary AI is already being used on the front lines to help pilots target the nearest objects. This is done by the unit 'Heavenly retribution' 54 OMBR of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, on the outskirts of Sloviansk.
