The reasons for his sudden absence have not been disclosed.

This ceremony was supposed to be his first major event after he confessed to his health struggles on 'Good Morning America' in June.

In April, Eric announced his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in an interview with People magazine. “I have been diagnosed with ALS,” he said. “I am grateful for the support of my loving family as we go through this new chapter.”

Eric is raising two children: 15-year-old Billie Beatrice and 13-year-old Georgia Geraldine, along with his wife Rebecca Gayheart.

Eric's experience with ALS

After announcing his condition, Eric shared how this disease has affected his mental and physical state.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer on GMA, Eric noted that his right arm has “completely stopped functioning.”

“I feel that in a few months, I won't be able to use my left arm either. It's scary,” said the star of 'Euphoria'.

Initially, Eric attributed his feelings to “too much texting,” but soon sought specialists when the symptoms worsened.

After nine months, he received a grim diagnosis. “I will never forget those three letters,” the actor shared. “It's been on my mind since I wake up. It's not a dream.”

Eric also noted that he fears losing mental functions in other parts of his body.

Why is the disease called Lou Gehrig's disease?

ALS, the most common type of lateral sclerosis, is also known as Charcot's disease and Lou Gehrig's disease.

Henry Louis 'Lou' Gehrig was born in the USA in 1903 and was a successful baseball player.

He had many records, including the most career grand slams – 23, and the most consecutive games played – 2,130.

Due to his remarkable career, he was nicknamed 'The Iron Horse', but in June 1939, on his 36th birthday, he received an ALS diagnosis.

Two days after the diagnosis, he left baseball, and this information became public.

It was only two years later, on June 2, 1941, that Gehrig passed away.

Due to its notoriety, ALS is often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease in North America.

“I am worried about my legs,” he confessed.

The star of 'The Last Ship' experienced a serious incident a few months ago when his daughter had to save him after he suddenly lost the ability to swim during a boating trip.

“When I jumped into the ocean and realized I couldn't get back to the boat. I thought, oh God. I am not safe in the water,” noted Eric, who was a competitive swimmer in school.

“She pulled me back to the boat. I was crying. I made sure she got back in the water and continued snorkeling with the guide. But I was devastated.”

Despite all the challenges, Eric is determined to fight the disease.

“I just don't feel that this is the end for me. I am fighting as much as I can,” announced the star of 'Time Count'.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a common degenerative neurological disorder that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
