Ukrainian gas storage facilities are being used less by European traders this summer due to Russian attacks on the country's infrastructure. Ukraine has the largest underground storage facilities in Europe, which were used last year by European companies to store excess gas before winter. But after the Russian offensive in spring, gas volumes in the storage facilities have significantly decreased. "Constant Russian attacks on Ukrainian storage facilities increase the risk of gas storage," said Marko Zaälfrank from Axpo. According to Argus, in June and July this year, gas volumes sent by European companies have significantly decreased compared to last year. The risk of damage to ground facilities used for pumping gas outside the storage facilities is a problem for traders. "The main issue is not the loss of gas, but the inability to retrieve it when needed," noted Zaälfrank. The price difference is also not large enough to justify the risk of pumping gas into a war zone.
