The EU is exploring the possibility of introducing a tax for shipping companies that operate in the Baltic Sea. The collected funds will be used to protect underwater cables. This was reported by Estonia's Minister of Defense, Hanno Pevkur, as reported by Reuters.

Various ways to protect marine infrastructure are being considered in the EU, including the possibility of installing special sensors to detect anchors on the seabed and additional reinforcement of cables with protective structures. However, such measures require financial resources.

According to Pevkur, the new tax will function as an 'insurance contribution' for the protection of marine infrastructure. In the future, companies may have to pay additional fees when passing through the Danish Straits, the minister noted.

Official investigations are still ongoing, but according to Pevkur, a series of recent incidents in the Baltic Sea may be related to coordinated actions of the Russian 'shadow fleet'.
