"I couldn't walk," Kathleen shared in 2023.
The film 'War of the Roses' was first released in 1989, and Kathleen played the role of Barbara Rose.
This dark comedy shows the breakdown of marriage between her character and Oliver Rose, played by Michael Douglas.
At the premiere of the reboot 'Roses,' she chose an elegant black outfit highlighting her experiences.
HEALTH ISSUES
Kathleen, hailing from Missouri, has faced numerous health challenges throughout her life.
She became a star after the release of the film 'Romancing the Stone' in 1984 with Michael Douglas.
However, just a few years later, her health began to decline.
Kathleen was at the peak of her popularity in the 1990s until rheumatoid arthritis forced her to reduce her activity.
This autoimmune disease affects joints and organs.
During the filming of 'Serial Mom' in 1993, Kathleen began to experience unknown pains and fevers.
Her legs would swell, so the actress couldn't wear shoes.
But the situation worsened.
"I couldn't walk," Kathleen shared in 2023.
"People don’t understand because it’s not life-threatening. It won’t kill me, but it kills your life," she said.
CHANGES
Kathleen began limiting herself to films, taking only minor roles.
She appeared in 'Friends' as Chandler Bing's mother in drag, as well as voiced characters in several films.
The actress continues to work; her latest role was in the 2023 show 'Dirt in the White House.'
She is gaining confidence despite fears that the disease may hinder her career.
"I wouldn't accept that. I’m a very stubborn woman. I came back to full strength as much as I could," she remarked.
"They were told I would be in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. That was almost 30 years ago. And I look at what I’ve done in 30 years and think, 'Well, screw you!'
Last year, she was seen on the red carpet with a cane during another premiere in New York.
