College students in Russia's Yelabuga are modifying drones by adding modems, SIM cards, and other elements to track flights. This was reported by communications specialist Sergey Beskrestnov.

Students from the local polytechnic college in Yelabuga are experimenting with drones by adding antennas, tape, insulating tape, and an Arduino electronic board. They have been given the opportunity to independently implement and improve the drone control system.

Recently, drones are being used more frequently at low altitudes, which complicates their detection by Ukraine's radar systems.

Every drone is programmed before the flight with checkpoints, allowing it to maneuver and operate in combat conditions. The Russians not only control the flight path but also enhance the functionality of the drones, which facilitates attacks, noted Beskrestnov.

The use of expensive satellite trackers turned out to be too costly. Therefore, the focus has shifted to using budget modems and SIM cards, which can be easily developed, he added.

It is noted that earlier the Ukrainian Armed Forces captured a Russian 'Tor' surface-to-air missile system worth over $24 million. A successful FPV drone detected and stopped the system when it wasn’t deployed in a combat position.
