Who is Saint Nicholas Really: The History of His Life and Legends.
According to ТСН: Every year in December, millions of Ukrainian children eagerly go to bed, knowing that a desired gift may appear under their pillow at night. They believe in miracles, kindness, and that Saint Nicholas rewards the obedient. But who is Saint Nicholas really, and where did he come from?
First of all, Saint Nicholas is not a fictional fairy tale character. He was a real person whose life became a symbol of mercy, kindness, and selflessness.
The Origins and Life of Saint Nicholas
The future Miracle Worker was born in 280 in the city of Patara, located in Asia Minor (now Turkey). He grew up in a pious and well-to-do family of Theophilus and Nonna. Nicholas's uncle was a local bishop, so the boy saw a vivid example of true service to people from an early age.
Nicholas deeply felt the poverty of others. His sincerity and compassion urged him to help in secret: at night, he would leave food, clothing, or gifts by the doors of the poor, aiming to save people without public displays of mercy.
After his parents' death, he gave away all his wealth to the needy and embarked on a pilgrimage to Palestine. Eventually, he became a priest in the city of Myra, and later — a bishop. It was during this time that his kindness and wisdom made Nicholas the figure we know today.
Legends of Saint Nicholas
Parents often ask how to explain to children who Saint Nicholas is, so that they believe in his kindness. Stories of his good deeds are the best way to do this.
Nicholas and the Three Bags of Gold
Once, Nicholas learned about a poor man who had three daughters. Without a dowry, the girls could not get married and risked ending up on the verge of survival. To save their honor, Nicholas secretly tossed three bags of gold through the window at night — one for each. Thus, the young priest saved their lives.
Who Accompanies Saint Nicholas
Many icons and illustrations show Nicholas next to a silvery-gray donkey. This faithful friend helps the Miracle Worker bring gifts to children. People say that this donkey is a descendant of the donkey that brought Jesus Christ to Jerusalem.
The Magical Book of Nicholas
There's a legend that Saint Nicholas possesses a special book in which the good and bad deeds of every child are recorded. But Nicholas is always ready to forgive — one just needs to sincerely apologize and promise to amend.
These stories help explain why Nicholas brings gifts — this is a symbol of reward for good deeds and a reminder of the importance of mercy.
Why Is Saint Nicholas Celebrated on December 6, Not 19?
Many people confuse the dates, so it's important for parents to know, why is Saint Nicholas celebrated on December 6, not 19 as it was before.
Saint Nicholas died on December 6 (according to the old style — December 19). With the transition of Ukrainian churches to the New Julian calendar, the date of celebration shifted. Now the celebration of Saint Nicholas Day in Ukraine is officially observed on December 6, consistent with global tradition.
The change of calendar made the festive period more logical: now the feast of Nicholas precedes Christmas on December 25, rather than falling closer to the New Year.
Thus, Saint Nicholas is not only a person who brings gifts but also a symbol of goodness and mercy, reminding of the importance of good deeds. With each passing year, faith in Saint Nicholas continues to inspire new generations and fill their hearts with warmth and hope.
