The 'Barbie' star was chosen by Kylie to portray her in the biopic.
Commenting on this news, Margot noted:
“This is crazy information. I’m just incredibly pleasantly surprised. Of course, I couldn't do it. I can't sing like Kylie.”
She also added:
“I don’t like it when people can’t sing but take part in a movie about singing, you know?”
When asked in 2023 who she would like to see in her role in a hypothetical film, Kylie replied:
“Margot Robbie — in my dreams. She would definitely have the Australian accent.”
At the premiere of her new drama 'The Big Bold Beautiful Journey' in New York, Margot recalled her evening with Kylie. She shared:
“I got a call from my team: 'Kylie Minogue wants to meet you,' and I thought: 'Oh my God, this is the best day of my life.'”
She noted again:
“I assumed she wanted to talk about some work or maybe organize a charity event. So I went to Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, and she was sitting there, the coolest, warmest, most wonderful creature you’ve ever met.”
“She just said: 'I thought you were Australian, I’m Australian, and we’ve never met. Let’s relax and have cocktails.' There were no further discussions about work, we just drank together.”
Despite it not being her strong suit, Margot revealed that she didn’t watch her latest film, as she left the London premiere after the red carpet to hit karaoke in Soho. She admitted:
“I went, but didn’t watch. I met up with friends after, which was wonderful. They came out of the movie.”
“In the end, we went to karaoke until one in the morning in Chinatown. I sang Celine until morning. I did the full version of 'Titanic.' You can’t go to karaoke and not sing Celine.”
Margot Robbie's refusal of the role of Kylie Minogue underscores not only her self-criticism but also the interesting dynamics between stars. Kylie’s wish for Margot to portray her in film shows her respect for her colleague's talent. This situation draws attention to the importance of self-portraiture in cinema, where actors must match not only the role but also the talents of the original.
