Israel wants to maintain Russian military bases in Syria
Israel is interested in a weakened and decentralized Syria, and the preservation of Russian military bases could be an important factor for this. This is reported by Reuters citing sources.
According to the agency, Israel actively promotes this idea in the US as a means to counter the growing influence of Turkey in the region. Israeli officials say that strengthening Ankara poses a threat to the country's security.
Meetings between representatives of Israel and the US took place in February. During these meetings, Israeli officials emphasized the positive aspect of Russia's presence in Syria, which surprised the American side.
Analyst Aron Lund noted that Israel is mainly concerned that Turkey may support a new Islamist order in Syria, which would serve as a basis for radical groups.
It remains unclear how Donald Trump views Israel's proposals. The US administration has not yet determined its strategy regarding Syria and the preservation of the American military contingent in the country.
