As a result of the elections, Masoud Pazeshkian became the new president of Iran. He promised to lift sanctions and develop relations with the East and the West, particularly with Europe. However, he agreed to provide Russia with up to 200 short-range missiles for use in Ukraine.

This step led to the imposition of new sanctions against Iran, reported Patrick Wintour, diplomatic editor of The Guardian newspaper.

According to the US Treasury Department, the contract for the supply of these missiles was signed at the end of 2023, before Pazeshkian's election and the death of the previous president Raisi in May.

In exchange for the missiles, Russia is providing Iran with nuclear technology. This was announced by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during a joint press conference with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy in London.
